Doctor to Doctor is a nonprofit organization founded in
Berkeley, California USA in 1994. We seek to provide assistance to
medical professionals in underserved places around the world.
Doctor to Doctor volunteers are medical professionals -
physicians, psychologists, nurses, and others who travel abroad to
meet with their colleagues in other countries. They carry with
them medications and books which are donated to the facilities
they visit.
Most of the sites visited have been in Southeast Asia with
Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar receiving most of
the Doctor to Doctor visits. However volunteers have also
traveled to Ukraine, Peru, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Mexico.
Most of our activity has been in psychiatry because the Founder
of Doctor to Doctor, Robert Dolgoff MD, is a psychiatrist.
However there have also been some visits by
medical
professionals with other specialties including oncology, speech
pathology, endocrinology, and ophthalmology.
Doctor to Doctor engages in the following activities:
We assist American health
professionals who wish to travel as individuals or in a small
group to countries which desire professional collaboration.
On a few occasions Doctor to
Doctor has provided opportunities for physicians in other
parts of the world to travel to America to attend professional
meetings.
Doctor to Doctor sends
books and medications to medical facilities in countries where
such items are in short supply.
We put on an educational
conference every year or two. The First
Vietnamese-American Conference on Psychiatry and Medical
Psychology was held in January 1997 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh,
Vietnam. A second conference was held
in November 1999, a third in July 2001,
and a fourth was held in March 2004.
The first four conferences were held in Vietnam. In January 2005
there was a conference in Yangon, Myanmar which was part of the
Second Mental Health Conference of the Myanmar Medical
Association. Also in January 2005 we put on a conference at the
West Visaya Medical Center in Iloilo City, Philippines. Three of
us will return there in late October 2005 for a brief visit.
Doctor to Doctor is small. We receive no foundation
support and rely entirely on our volunteers for financial
backing. We do receive donations of drugs (and sometimes books)
from pharmaceutical companies. Once in a while we pay an employee
for special projects but almost all of the work is done by
volunteers. The volunteers who do most of the work are Bob
Dolgoff, Margarita Nicol, Gregg Wheatland, and Tran Ngoc Cam. The
best way to get more information about Doctor to Doctor is
to send e-mail or to call
Bob Dolgoff at the Doctor to Doctor telephone number,
(510) 548-5200 or at his office (510) 841-8484 x 104.
If you are interested in going abroad on a D2D trip please let
us know and we can discuss this.
